Today, IP (IPv4) networks are subjected to various attacks such as identity impersonation (referred to as spoofing), loss of privacy, loss of data integrity, communications monitoring, and denial-of-service. In order to guard against the various security attacks on the Internet authentication, confidentiality, Integrity and Privacy are the basic security measures that need to be incorporated into the network.
IPv4, the network protocol on which today’s Internet is built, is supplemented by IPSEC for its security needs. IPv6, the new version of IP has IPSEC as part of the basic protocol design. Implementation of IPSEC is mandated in IPv6 and hence will be available in all implementations. IPSEC addresses needs such as privacy, authentication, integrity and secrecy. Consequently, IPv6 provides for these needs.

Jayachandra K – is a senior software engineer at the System Technology and Software Division, Hewlett Packard. His interests include Security and Privacy in IPv6 and IPv6 deployment. He is actively involved with the IPv6 forum and heads the Education & Awareness Working Group at the IPv6 Forum India.
Gopi Krishna Garge – is the director at Exocore Consulting P Ltd., India and a Network Services Consultant to ERNET India at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His interests are in the areas of deploying provider networks, network performance monitoring and tuning.
Tusar Gupta - is a systems specialist at Network Solutions Ltd. His areas of interests include systems management, networking and IPv6 deployment.
