LB/2004 is done

Finally, LB/2004 has come to an end. At an emotion-packed finale, much was talked about, including the formation of an organisation to handle the event from now on, thoughts on a new name that frees the event from the "Linux-only" and regional aspects, the possibility of making the event happen in other cities as well, this being the last event at the JNTata/IISc auditorium, and much more.

Plans are already afoot for next year's event - if you want to be part of them, make sure that you are on the Discussion List.

Many people are interested in the slides of the 80+ talks that happened, and these will be available in a few days, after we have sorted things out. Till then - patience!

Many thanks to all the speakers and the audiences for making this a fantastic event.

Watch this space!

Entertainment program announced!

LB/2004 and no entertainment? Hah!

On day 1, at 6:30, we have a video recording of Eben Moglen, General Counsel of the FSF, giving his "Die Gedanken Sind Frei" talk at WOS3 in Berlin this June. OK, that's not strictly entertainment, but the man knows how to speak, and he has points that make you sit up and think. Don't miss this if you are into FOSS, or an advocate of free speech and free thoughts.

On day 2, at 6:30, we have Amateur Night - free for all musical performances by amateur musically inclined hackers and other people. Read the writeup for more details.

On day 3, at 5:30pm, the grand closing function happens, followed by the return of Phenom, Bangalore's favourite progressive and classical rock group. One hour of solid rock will leave you asking for more, and at the end of that, they have a special surprise for you.

LB/2004 secures sponsorship

We are happy to announce that Linux Bangalore/2004 has now secured full sponsorship for the event.

The following are the generous sponsors who are supporting the event:

PLATINUM SPONSOR: Hewlett Packard

There is no greater feeling of security than the one you get when you know that you can rely on someone blindly, and will never be let down.

For the fourth year in a row, HP has shown its support for the Free and Open Source community, by becoming the Platinum Sponsor of Linux Bangalore/2004.

Such consistency in support comes out of the fact that HP recognises, values and supports the Free & Open Source Software process of development, and HP actively shows this support by being involved in numerous Open Source projects as both a sponsor, as well as an active participant.

Here is what Subramanya S Mudigere, Director, HP (India Software Operations), has to say: "HP considers it a privilege to accept the role of being a Platinum Sponsor for LB/2004. Thanks for giving us the opportunity once again."

HP - we thank *you* for your unwavering support for India's most important Free & Open Source Software event!

GOLD SPONSOR: Infosys Technologies

For many people involved in Information Technology across the world, Infosys is probably the most prominent name to have risen out of the Indian subcontinent, becoming India's visible global organisation. While Free & Open Source technologies thrive at Infosys, this has so far not been very visible to the outside world.

So you could have knocked us over with a feather when we hesitantly approached Infosys this year for sponsorship for Linux Bangalore/2004, and received the following reply from Raghuveer B K, Senior manager, Product Engineering Group at Infosys: "Infosys Technologies Ltd. is happy to support the Free and Open Source community by becoming the Gold sponsor for Linux Bangalore/2004".

Having Infosys as a sponsor is matter of pride for us - not only because it is such a prominent name, but also because Infosys is an Indian organisation!

We thank Infosys for its support of the event.

SILVER SPONSOR: Encore Software

When one of India's most important innovations, the Simputer, hit the radar of the world, it was a moment of pride for both the Indian nation as well as for the Free & Open Source community - because the Simputer ran on Linux.

Encore Software, the people behind the design and creation of the Simputer, have been supporters of the Free & Open Source development methodology, and when we approached them for sponsorship, this is what Mark Mathias, President of Encore Software, had to say: "Encore Software is happy to support the Open Source community by supporting Linux Bangalore/2004 as Silver Sponsor. This is Encore's small way of saying thank you to the Free & Open Source world that has done so much to make the Encore Simputer possible."

Thank you, Encore!

There are several other supporting sponsors whom we will announce in a separate post later today.

The final speaker list will be put up later today as well, and the talks schedule will be up in the next day or so. Some surprises await you. :)

First list of talks published

The first list of talks has been published..

Yes, it was a real tough decision making process, and it is far from over. What you need to do now is to send in your slides by 1730 hrs (GMT+0530), 16 November, 2004, by mailing them to slides2004 (at) linux-bangalore dot org.

Following receipt of the slides, the talks will again be screened based on the content in the slides and then a final list of talks will be published. Note that we intend to have
a few talks in reserve to accomodate any last minute
non-availabilities.

If your name appears in the final list, let us make you aware that we expect you to be here, at any cost!

Hmmm ... more rigorous hours coming up for the team ...

A number of people requested us to give them time till Sunday, the 31st of October, since they won't have time to write their abstracts before that.

We decided to OK that, but this is really the last chance for people to get their talks in before we start shortlisting.

So if you are planning to give a talk at LB/2004, register now!

Speakers will be intimated middle of next week, and the first shortlist will appear at the same time. After that, it will basically be fine-tuning, before the final freeze a week later.
