Why is the event not on a weekend?
As discussed on the Mailing List, the weekend is inconvenient for the vast majority of people. Neither students nor professionals will give up their weekends to attend an event. Having the event during the week allows visitors to Bangalore to conduct business meetings and other business-related activities before returning to their home cities. Having the weekend free allows for post-event, off-site interaction between participants.
These dates are now fixed and will not change, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
What is the new name of the event?
The new name of the event is FOSS.IN.
Where will the event be (venue)?
FOSS.IN/2005 will be held at the Bangalore Palace.
Note this is the actual palace and the palace gardens, not the Palace grounds.
The venue was chosen because of its scenic beauty and because it is truly representative of Bangalore's mix of cultures - western and Indian.
When will the Call for Particpation go out?
Within days after the event announcement, i.e. Real Soon Now.
Can we have a {favourite_topic} track?
If you are willing to take charge of the topic, develop it, document its scope, identify speakers, develop an agenda, and generally make sure that the track has useful content, then you simply need to propose the topic by sending a note to the Mailing List.
Remember - *you* will be the person responsible for thetrack. If you do not want to take responsibility for what you are proposing, find someone who will, *then* propose it.
Will there be entertainment this year?
Yes - the new venue specifically permits it.
Will there be more talks?
Yes
Will the Rs.500 delegate fee increase?
No
Will it decrease?
No
Will there be additional charges for attending?
There *could* be content related to the event that could carry an additional charge (such as a business related sub-event), but only if it is needed to fund additional facilities not required by the main conference. At this time, we do not have any details in place.
There will be *no* additional charges for attending the main conference, any of the talks or any of the events or activities, including workshops. The delegate charge of Rs.500 will cover it all.
Will we have more choice in food?
Yes. We have worked out a way of offering more choices and flexibility to delegates, without increasing costs to the delegates. Details will be announced just before the event.
Is {name_of_celebrity} coming this year?
Maybe
What is the BLUG? Is this event a BLUG meet?
The BLUG is the Bangalore Linux User Group, a group of LINUX/FOSS users and enthusiasts. FOSS.IN is an event, conducted by Linux Bangalore annually for the FOSS community.
Linux Bangalore != BLUG
What is the relation between the event and the BLUG?
The BLUG, like all FOSS user groups, is a part of the event. While the event is conducted in Bangalore, the BLUG facilitates the event, just as the local FOSS group in another city were to facilitate the event, were it to be held in that city.
Does this mean that the event may happen in another city sometime?
Yes. One of the reasons behind the renaming of the event was to remove the regional and scope restrictions implied by the original name of the event.
Is the event for Linux only?
No, the event is about Free & Open Source Software (FOSS), technologies and philosophies. This includes, but is not limited to, Linux, *BSD and FOSS applications under MS Windows and MacOS and other platforms. It also addresses the techno-social impact of FOSS, including education, business practices, etc.
How is the event funded?
The event is independently funded by sponsorship it receives from industry, government, and other bodies who support FOSS.
Where can I find information about sponsorship opportunities?
The event website (http://foss.in/2005) will carry information about sponsorship opportunities. Until this information is put up, you can write to sponsors (at) linux-bangalore dot org.
