Multimedia - Powered by Linux

Objective:

  • To show the power of linux on the multimedia front
  • To show the various multimedia applications on Linux

Target Audience:

  • Practically everyone. More specifically home segment

Demo Lineup:

  • XMMS for playback of various audio and video codec
  • XMMS output and visualization plugins
  • MPEG1 (VCD) playback using XMMS, Xmovie, ZZplayer, MpegTV and others
  • Video Capture and editing using Broadcast2000
  • TV Viewing using XawTV, GNOMETV and KwinTV
  • MIDI using Jazz++
  • Streaming audio using Icecast/Shout
  • Streaming webcam using Camserv and Camstream
  • OpenGL applications like Quake
  • Multi-head display using XFree86 4.0's Xinerama feature
  • Multicast audio streaming
  • Esound
  • Games

Total no. of machines:

  • 4 machines incld. an iMAC (or a cube)

Hardware Config:

  • Sound Cards (AWE32 or better preferred)
  • Creative Dxr2 DVD drive, SB live and a PC Works 4 point surround would be awesome
  • TV Tuner/grabber board (PixelView would be cool)
  • Display boards which support OpenGL (Riva TNT2 or better preferred as the Detonator drivers for these are almost on par with Windows)
  • 17" inch (and bigger) color monitors
  • >64 MB RAM on all machines
  • Powered speakers for all machines
  • A USB(?) webcam
  • 10/100 NICS on all machines
  • Keyboard for MIDI stuff
  • A Matrox G400H dual-head display board deeply desired.

Network Config:

  • The bandwidth requirements are on the high side (streaming audio and video)
  • The group should have its own switch
  • A static public IP, so that the whole of IT.COM can hook up to us for multimedia feeds and streaming webcam

Floor space required:

  • 36 (6x6) Square feet for machines
  • Ample standing place for visitors
  • Recommend that the group should be located well inside the stall so as to avoid overcrowding in the front

Power Requirements:

  • At least 1KV power source
  • 7 power-strips
  • UPS? Do we need them?

Handout material for interested visitors:

  • Documentation reqd for all items exhibited or demo ed.
  • Details should include:

    - Hardware specs of the machines

    - Applications software used

    - What distro is being used (incld. kernel details)

    - Config steps (Basically a quick start guide)

Poster designs:

  • Needs work. Need some input here badly!

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Just about anybody who has hacked on cool multimedia stuff other then the usual VCD and mp3s
  • Should be able to speak on anything with respect to multimedia4linux
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of hardware (sound and video)
  • Quake gurus ;-)
