Web Development - Powered by Linux

Objective:

  • To demonstrate the variety of web-development and web-infrastructure tools available on the Linux Platform. While options in this area are staggering, we shall only choose products that can be downloaded without a fee. (either for unlimited use, or for use for a fixed period)

  • The Stall will have one server that can switched between two or three backends depending on the interest or queries of the visitors. One client will serve to represent the whole world out there. The volunteer will prepare small toy applications to demonstrate various webdev tricks and techniques

  • The Stall should serve as a meeting ground for interested Web Developers who want to know the various tools available on Linux, rather than a stall that shows things. In short, more tell than show.

Target Audience:

  • Web Developers and all those wannabe java-scriptkiddies who hold that HTML is an analyically inclined artist's answer to C++.

Hardware Requirements:

  • 1 RSM (Reasonably Good Machine) to work as a Server
  • 1 PGM (Passably Good Machine) to serve as a Client

Bandwidth Required:

  • Possibly 1 static IP so as to serve the entire Show with blinding fast search engines, crash-proof Web servers

Floor Space Requirements:

  • Space enough for two machines, 4 Volunteers, and about 3 to 4 visitors. The stall does not have flashy things to show except may be the IDEs, (the SSL Certification Daemon has been known to work without a sound card) so we expect to hold serious discussions with serious web developers. About 4 or 5 chairs would be welcome.

Volunteers

  • Anybody with an understanding of Web Technologies on Linux is welcome. Merely knowing that Apache outperforms IIS is not a qualification ;) Everybody knows that. What we should do is to point interested visitors to the abundance of quality choices. It is hoped that Web-Gurus will periodically visit the stall and hold forth on the obscure details of Web Programming in case the stall is visited by an errant contentious visitor who insists that the latest Webcraft surveys are biased and grossly exaggerated. Volunteers, write to Gurunandan Bhat.

Power Requirements:

  • No power required. Powered by Linux ;)
