This talk will describe the development of Web based applications using Linux, Apache, MySql, and Perl (LAMP). While each component of LAMP is a topic in itself, the focus of the talk will be on development with Apache and Perl.
Building high performance customized web applications with Apache requires some knowledge of its API. The Perl interface to the Apache API makes it simple to intervene at each step of the HTTP transaction cycle. Each of the phases in processing a HTTP request will be explained. The steps to create a Perl module using mod_perl to intervene in any of the phases and a sample application will be shown.
The process of porting existing CGI scripts to run with mod_perl will also be shown. Some of the problems of and debugging Apache Perl modules will be included. A sample application will demonstrate a handler for the logging phase. Log entries will be made to a database in real time. These entries can be viewed on the Web or with other tools. Examples of other applications such as - customized authentication, content filtering, and maintaining state
will also be described. |
